How well do you know your neighbours? | ||

As a child in the UK and a young married in Australia I knew all my neighbours, their children, extended families, their likes and dislikes (even of each other), the kids were just as at home in our house as their own, and we knew that if anything happened we could rely on one or even several to pitch in and help, mind kids, cook meals if someone was sick, get washing in if it rained etc.etc. After moving to a rural property for many years we moved back into a little rural town nearly four years ago and apart from saying "Hello" or waving we know only the Christian names of those on either side of us. I wanted to invite the neighbours round when we moved in but my husband said to wait and see if they made welcoming overtures first. During the Covid lockdown the neighbours on one side did ask if we needed shopping doing or any help. When I returned after two weeks in hospital for cancer surgery they did ask two weeks later over the fence, if I had been away on holiday. How well do you know your neighbours or has the 'living in each other's pockets sense of neighbourhood long gone? |
