Does anyone know much about Chemotherapy and / or side effects?
Edward S 49734718-Mar-25 03:20 am
I have stage 4 lung cancer and finally began treatment on the 11th March 2025 after waiting 5 months for treatment to commence.
My treatment is 2 different types of Chemotherapy plus a trial drug and both of these chemotherapy types causes hair loss
It is only a week since my FIRST treatment and I have already had several different side effects and am wondering what other side effects to expect as my treatment continues
Also any tips on how to ease side effects would be very helpful

My oldest sister had chemo and experienced sores inside her mouth and frequent UTI's. And the nausea and hair loss and fatigue, She was on chemo for breast cancer though. Good luck to you, They should be able to tell you what to expect or answer any questions at the place where you are getting your treatments,

People I know experienced GI issues such as diarrhea. Be sure to stay hydrated. I will pray for you. You might experience nausea and ginger tea provides proven relief.

Thank you for that and I will definitely add ginger tea to my shopping list

So Ed, don't let the b...s grind you down. Try to get above all the misery and just keep trying to live through it. Look how many of us do manage to get back and enjoy the rest of their journey. Try and find things that let you relax. A hard job I grant you but keep trying and you'll win! God Bless.

Thank you I am trying not to let things get me down, although very hard, stressful and tiring but I am trying to live a normal life as much as possible and preparing for my end because I was told without treatment I have 12 months and WITH treatment I might have 2 plus years My friend is dealing with prostate cancer stage 2 and we go with each other as support on our long trips for medical appointments We live in Gippsland and my treatment is in Clayton and our only form of transport is taxi which is $440 each round trip plus weekly taxi trips to Pakenham for blood tests costing $ 200 per round trip

Hi Edward ask to speak to the hospital social worker or disability advocate if they have one? If you have a pension card especially they can organise the red Cross to drive you in for these appointments ..at least one way ? Cabcharge vouchers are also available not sure though how to access .. maybe the cancer council can help or again the hospital social worker .. all the very best with your treatment Edward xx

Thank you for all that information. Unfortunately I live in Gippsland and that type of Red cross service is not available in my area. The volunteer services out this way charge $70 per trip to cover fuel and wear and tear costs on the volunteers car plus they do not allow my friend to come along as my support due to thier safety and insurance rules As for social worker and cab charge vouchers IF I was having normal treatment through the hospital they would assist in that way HOWEVER I am being treated through the "Clinical Trials" department therefore the manufacturer of the new drug being trialled is responsible to pay all costs, which they do with everything else BUT because I live 100 Km from where I get my treatment they will only refund 88 cents per Km up to 100 Km

I don’t know much about it but all I can really tell you from my uncle having cancer for 4 years till he passed a few years ago is there are good days and bad days and to not eat big meals if your taste goes away cause your taste may go away and to be careful with chemotherapy cause in my uncle”s case it still ended up with him on hospice and I wasn’t allowed to go with my dad and brother before he passed cause my parents said it wouldn’t be good to see my uncle like that

remembering people how they used to be, not how they finally were was a very sound decision made for you by your parents. There's chemo for cancer caught early, and chemo for palliative care. Sounds like your uncle was the latter.

I don’t really know because he even had a port in his chest at one point and had multiple types of cancer every time his cancer went away it’d come back with a different type

Yeah I know I never really recovered after my sister picked me up from school one day which was today”s date 2 years ago and said my grandpa was lifted to another hospital because the people at the other hospital discharged him to a rehabilitation facility after his surgery but then he had to get life flighted across state lines to another hospital because he got septic and his organs were shutting down

I am extremely sorry about your Uncle passing away and how you feel about what happened but you were protected from the worst which was the best thing for you at the time Although you miss him, what happened to him is very sad but please keep in mind that he is no longer suffering and is in Heaven watching over you

Yes, nausea, tiredness, headaches, fatigue, as they would have told you for 3 or 4 days after the injection or oral medicine, do not share toilets ect with other people for risk of contamination from chemo leaving the body. I wish you the best and hope you get well soon.

share your experiences with the nurses . they have lots of good down to earth tips. Run a day by day diary and give it to the oncologist at each regular consultation, you will get many and varied side effects. Some of these could influence a variation in the chemo. Don't try to eat big meals once your taste goes away. It does no harm to have a google look at what is out there. I should have said I've been there. Lung and bowel cancer, and 6 months of chemo.

Thank you for all of your great advise and tips ALL of which I will do I do also very sincerely hope that you have now been cured from both of your cancers and have a long healthy life My treatment is made harder by the fact that I also have Severe Emphysema and my heart Aorta is double normal size I have found that since my first treatment I am coughing a lot and coughing up huge amounts of phlegm which is good as it is clearing my lungs BUT I do not know if this is being done by the Chemotherapy or the NEW drug they are trialling on me or maybe it is both I am on a TRIAL treatment which goes for 5 and a half years consisting of 3 years of treatment followed 2 and a half years of follow up scans, blood tests etc to see how the treatment is working and whether it grows back or not Either way they say my stage 4 cancer is NOT curable but should slow it down
