To watch or not to watch

On December 23rd 2019 I turned my television off, and it hasn't been turned on since. I haven't watched TV for over 2 and a half years. People are genuinely surprised by that and often ask why. I lob the question "why should I?" right back, and they are stumped. Here's your chance to help them out. What benefits does watching TV provide?

                      I like watching the news on the world channel to know what goes on in another country and how it would effect this country that we live in. I also like cooking shows and a good movie every now and then it is something to watch a good movie every now and then. Although the world outside is important too.

                        I don't watch that much tv unless cooking shows. I feel like we watch on news is killed or loss human freedom and make me sick i side of me. Good on you stop watching tv. I am happy for you as once a person stop tv you find out they new world outside the tv box's.

                          I must admit I haven't watched a lot of TV myself. There are some programs about animals and true stories that I like to watch - including current affairs programs. Personally I think to not watch it "at all" is a bit extreme (just my opinion) but certainly it does NOT control my life either. I know people who turn it on the minute they get up.............. Absolutely no way I say. Best wishes to you.

                            i am alone at night- and morning- just me and doggy. So i have tv on in background so i can listen to bits and pieces while surfing the net- and playing here on Planet Rewardia, and texting or messaging friends- and playing Spotify on my tablet. Who said older people can't multitask. And sometimes need to type one handed as the bunny or dog need head pats.

                                          Well I wouldn be very tired without my TV, the best sleep I get is on my couch in front of the telly. I find it very hard to get to sleep in bed and let the box bore me to noddy land, then I half wake up and slide into bed to instant sleep.

                                            TV is certainly a personal preference. I very rarely watch TV during the day, i prefer to have the radio or music on as i like background noise (it helps with my tinnitus). I will usually turn the TV on from about 6 or 7 and watch documentaries, game shows, RAGE/music shows or those real estate/home hunters and home renovation shows (but i won't watch reality type shows as there seems to be too much fake-ness and drama).

                                              If you watch the ABC you will learn things if you watch the commercial channels you'll rot your brain with American Garbage and learn nothing at all.

                                                I often turn the ABC off, especially when they start their rants about climate change. 4 Corners last Monday night was a bit of a waste of time.

                                                Well if you prefer to ignore facts that is your prerogative but back when we where on the farm in the early 70's just looking at the rainfall records that went back over 100 years showed that the climate had changed dramatically. Instead of regular rain over the year we got heavy rain that caused floods and then nothing for the rest of the year. Sure we got more rain over the year but 3 inches in a single hit and then nothing more for the rest of the year was not suitable for running sheep as most got washed away when it rained and then what was left didn't have any water for the rest of the year so we got used to digging great big holes pushing sheep carcuses into them and then covering them up. But don't worry there is no Climate Change it is natural for Rain Forrests to burn it just has never happened previously in our recorded history but they are forests so they must burn right? I'll however admit it is very hard to see anything when you have your head buried under the dirt because you do not want to see the 100 foot high flames coming down on you at 40 miles per hour.

                                                I don't deny the climate is changing but it's a natural occurrence. I watched a programme about climate change on Saturday. It was in Spain and the sand is moving but it has uncovered a city buried long ago by moving sand. So I guess climate change covered it and climate change is now uncovering it. There is so much more to the weather than CO2's, and if you get rid of them all plant life will die. There is nothing that mankind does that is perfect but he thinks he can change the weather. Whose head is under the dirt?

                                                yes it is Natural but even man can make natural changes happen far faster than they should be happening. Just think of it this way if we where to have another Ice Age which started in 1000 years with 1 KM of ice over where london currently is how many people would survive? The planet can change all it likes and will not be affected all that much but Humanity is a different story things change too quickly and we die or at the very least many die but on th eup side if the legends are correct with all that water turned into ice and only the regions around the middle of the planet that are currently far below the water surface who ever is still around may find Atlantis or it's remains at least. As for the sand in Spain how fast did it cover the city that was recently exposed? if it was like Pompey just about every person there died on the day that the Volcano erupted and if the sand moved in fast enough many would have died in under a week in Spain as they would chose to stay put and wait for the sand to recede which it obviously did not. unless of course you wish to claim it was there last week and has just been discovered now and not lost to history.

                                              If you watch the right programs, like on PBS, National Geographic, or The History Channel, it can be very educational. On the other hand, I also went without television for a couple of years, and we played chess, cards, board games and read books. A little of this, a little of that goes a long way! (I forgot to add BBC as another excellent station to watch!) ;-D

                                                When our kids were all attending school we gave our television away and went many years with no tv. Our lives were taken up with sport and going away camping or hiking with friends and their children. Didn't harm them and they didn't miss it. We had newspapers delivered and they kept up with what was going on in the world that way as we talked about it.

                                                          We moved just over a month ago,the house we live in had no reception and no aerial,so we had no t.v. Honestly we really didn't miss it. My partner has even lost 17kgs as he doesn't sit in front of the t.v eating every night. We have installed an aerial and it is working now,but we only put it on if there is an NRL game or a movie on sbs that we like. As for benefits ,I don't think there are. All the things that you get from t.v you can stream and more on phone or laptop anywhere anything. Like anything else it's a habit you get into,and a change is as good as a holiday if you ask me.

                                                                  It is very important for Governments and Corporations...you know where most of your customers/citizens are...it stops them thinking too much about what they could be doing instead...and it stunts IQ, the urge to rebel...creativity and in some cases the will to live....TV the opiate of the masses...it would be a more interesting world without it... that is for sure...

                                                                                        Very little. I watch ABC's 7.00pm news - my partner watches it mainly for the weather reports.Most programs are repeats and I can't be bothered with most of the programs. Frankly I'd rather read a book, no ads.

We are too dependent on these so called entertainment that keep us indoors. I am mainly on the computer more than I should be. My mobile phone is mostly off. I believe it has caused me to become more lazy. Hard to break free from it now.

I have Foxtel and I do record a lot of shows - my preferable way of watching because I can fast forward through the ads. I combine my evenings with TV and surveys & games on Rewardia (and others). I am a multi-tasker. I don't watch any sport.

                                                                                                    Television provides entertainment and keeps you abreast on daily news items plus current affairs. It can be a form of relaxation or company if you happen to live on your own. Personally I couldn't live without mine. However I believe if you have company it should be an agreed thing its either off or on and should definately be off at meal times.

I like to be entertained by what we watch & record, but as people have commented, there are a lot of programs that are repeats, Channel 10 & Ch 12 are the worst for this.

I look forward to new episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Station 19, but that's about it. Sometimes I like to watch a movie with my husband, but mostly I like to read, or play games on Rewardia!

Today it is ALL Repeats of repeats of repeats and then they all start repeating them all over again! Add to that the endless, mind-killing Advertisements, which includes those pointless Station Self-Promoting Advertisements for their programs with which such channels in Australia as the Australian Broadcasting Commission (a Tax-payer-funded, Free-to-Air Tv & Radio organization) The Commercial Channels, and the 100% Foreign (US) Owned Ch10 in particular, play just 2 or 3 minutes of the show you are watching and then interrupt it with 5-7 minutes of inane Adverts. We still watch the News but as we have already seen everything else they put on numerous times we have switched off.

                                                                                                                          When I get a survey asking me what I watch on television I'm genuinely stumped for an answer. I'm more likely to write "Brian Henderson on the Nine News" or "Hawaii 5O" or perhaps "Bill and Ben the flowerpot men" from my childhood. I DO occasionally turn the "idiot box" o n to see if it still works but there is NOTHING I'm missing on MSM except to hear a bunch of criminals read out the talking points of the day delivered by those in power or to interview a politician or health minister who blatantly lies straight at the camera and who idoesnt give a jot if you die by listening to him or her! Those parroting the narrative are told what the propaganda for that day is and they dare not go off script and say anything truthful or it will be the LAST thing they ever say on-screen! The CIA didn't call it "television programming" for nothing you know! Best go to those smaller platforms where truth isn't extinct if you don't want to be lied to! As for me I'd rather read a book!

We watch movies and the news so we are informed about what is going on not just around us but also in the world we live in. We watched The Masked Singer and we are watching The Amazing Race. For us it is our only entertainment. We watch the NRL and State of Origin. We record movies so we can watch them at a later date and we have kept some movies we have enjoyed watching so we can watch them again. Movies like The Street Cat Called Bob, Tracks and Zoo which is about an elephant that was going to be shot by the Germans in WW2 but the boy saved it with the help of an elderly lady and his friends. Love seeing movies that I have read the book of as both are very different. I guess it is entirely your choice and each to their own. My sister isn't one for watching tv but she does binge watch a whole series which we never do.

Do away with both and all hell would break loose. So many people would be at a loss of not knowing what to do with their time. Doing away with mobile devices would be interesting also?

It is getting more difficult to find unwind programs, but I do also enjoy trying to answer questions on quiz shows :) as for news nah it's way to biased/one sided and mostly under reported or exaggerated

                                                                                                                                                                  There are too many ads, too many fake "reality" shows on, too many shows that are actually ads that are trying to convince people that they are "informative" or "entertaining" shows and then they have all these extra channels that seem to serve no other purpose than being 24 hour infomercial and home shopping channels and then when actual shows are over on the "tv" channels, they run infomercials for the rest of the night so I really don't see a point in free to air. This is why I stream, No ads and no ads that are pretending to be shows and no infomercials etc (even Foxtel had informercial channels)

                                                                                                                                                                    I throughly enjoy watching TV, particularly the odd sports games, a movie starring one of my favoured actors/actresses and my favourite Soaps - Emmerdale and Shortland Street...It is my relaxing time, which doesn't require too much concentration and if I nod off, no-one is offended!! Also, I enjoy being updated by the News and the other local happenings. I know people 'joined at the hips' with their electronic devices can also access these features, but that is their choice - just as watching TV is mine.

Enjoy having a go at the questions. Usually watch some of the news need to keep up to date. Turn off what is not good.

                                                                                                                                                                                                I Love the history and story channel where all they present is ancient history and it is fascinating to learn things you never learned in school and would otherwise not know about, like the building of the Suez Canal, and The Hoover Dam. All footage is in black and white and they interview the 2 or 3 elderly people that are still alive that worked on them. Also learning about the beginning to end result of the Panama Canal was really cool. Thats what tv is good for. They do documentries on Nostradamus, and the ancient Egyptians. Its engrossing and so informative.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  I was away working for three years never watched tv only had Netflix on my iPad never really watched much tv since 2015 I’ve started watching SBS food and Netflix this year don’t watch any other tv .
