Discussion of the Day
Have you or loved ones been affected by scams?
TimtamMar 20, 25
Scams are everywhere these days email, phone calls, SMS, and more seeking personal details for identity theft, investments, deep fakes, security, and romance scams. People lose millions globally.
An older family member had her accounts hacked when someone stole her phone, even attempting to steal her pension by changing bank details. Luckily, they got nothing but the phone, though they took her confidence and security.
I regularly get scam messages and block them, never answering unknown calls unless they leave a message.
Have you or anyone you know been scammed? What kind of scam was it, and were they able to reverse it, or did they lose money?

I I have been unfortunately been scammed multiple times in the last three months my first one who got over me more than once was I guess romantic scam from somebody who was supposed to live in Texas, but that was life and I was supposedly helping him then there was me applying for loan through many different loan companies to see what I can get so I could pay in mentor and trainer in my own entrepreneurship and Internet, marketing and two companies were able to get into my account and take everything I had. The one loan company said they wanted to help my credit score so they also needed to show Trans Union or whoever that I’ve been a client of theirs paid so they were gonna put money into my account and then I was gonna pay around and pay it back and then my loan would go in, there is also been almost every person that talks to me through messenger is a scammer or an imposter to somebody. Those are so many details of what I’ve had to go through right now or still going through. I just apparently had this big sign of my back. It says global take me or something and it seems to be like I’m a magnet. I don’t even leave the house or anything so. It is nuts that you can’t trust anything anymore.

In my local town a woman was scammed out of $250,000 over the last year. It involved a whole lot of gift cards. The worst I ever got was being signed up to a dating site when I tried to claim my 'free' hair dryer. I got out of that within 5 minutes. I don't know anyone personally who fell for scams but a granddaughter was pretty far into a conversation with a scammer when her spidey sense made her put a stop to it. She'd given no information but they had her phone number and email to 'prove' they were calling from her bank.

I just wonder WHY the people doing the romance scams from other countries have such a hold on our Americans? Are they brain washing them somehow with phone calls or what? I have tried and tried to get a family member to stop with sending money, but she thinks she is going to get gold. She believes all this crazy stuff this guy tells her and refuses to listen to the truth. Like the rest of her family, looks like I will have to cut ties with her too. Just saying!!! I refuse to be a part of what she is doing.

This is exactly how they do it. They find someone vulnerable and take advantage. I see it as any other abusive relationship. The abuser finds a vulnerable or trusting person, sucks them in with their charm, and then once the prey is hooked, they go as far as they can until the person says Enough!! Your family member is caught in an abusive relationship but is still in denial and trusting the person to follow through with their promises. I'm sorry for your feelings of helplessness but I would urge you to not cut ties with her. I think that would make her even more vulnerable to this person who she thinks loves her. It's definitely not your responsibility to make her see the light, but if you can be there for her when she does, that will go a long way in her healing. Take care:)

I have had a few phone calls that were attempts at scamming but have not been caught to date. The last time my son happened to be visiting so I let him deal with the scammer and he kept them talking on the phone for quite some time before threatening (not politely) to call the police - of course they hung up immediately. Our elderly next door neighbour is quite confused and she was caught but fortunately we contacted her bank straight away and they paid her the $700 she lost since she had been with the bank for many years.

No. Have had attempted scams. I always check the address, email or ring the number myself. Did have someone trying to get into my laptop but just turned if off and when I restarted I did a virus scan. We all have to be very aware these days. I do not keep my bank details on my phone. I just type in the account nos and passwords each time.

I went to order some Keto weight loss drugs on line. What looked like a legitimate site with famous people endorsing the product was a scam. Luckily my bank stopped the transaction and saved me from a loss. It has made me question everything before I buy anything on line. I only buy from reputable sites now or get it locally from the shopping centre.

My husband who has dementia has been scammed twice, small amounts thankfully but we didn't get any of it back. We did have a more than $4000 fraud on one of our credit cards which the bank spotted immediately and a company I shop with gave me a credit card, the company had a data breach and I have 2 frauds on the card. While I didn't lose any money having the cards cancelled was most inconvenient.

I called in on a friend and she was on the phone and sat in front of her computer... She acknowledged me, and indicated she was on phone so I put the kettle on for a cuppa and went back to the lounge which is where her computer was... suddenly realised she was about to give someone access to her pc, and I jumped in and got her attention, she told me what was happening and I advised her to call technical support herself if she was having problems cos it sounded like a scam to me. She ended the call immediately, she made the phone call and it was a scam. Thank goodness I dropped in when I did.

My sister lost $29,000 recently and only recovered $7,000. I do not give bank details over the phone...even if I feel it's 99% legit. That 1% when it's not can ruin your life forever. If I have a problem that requires payment or bank details, I see them in person or pay through PayPal. I once made a payment through PayPal that was a scam and got 100% of my money back. It's part of their policy.

Yes, twice in the last couple of months. When will I ever learn. Anyway both times it was through ads on Facebook. Both times I had seen the ads many times, the first one Amazon Palet sale. I have seen this ads for years. when I didn't get an instant acknowledgement I became suspicious and luckily I got my money back. the second time, the tupperware closing down sale. I knew it was indeed closing down, I did get an instant acknowledgement and even a follow up saying the goods were on their way. After a couple of weeks I became suspicious when I tried to track the order. Unfortunately I lost my $40. Facebook is an absolute disgrace. They should be getting these ads. Since these unfortunate events I have heard from other that most of the ads on Facebook are scams. Oh, have I ever learned my lesson. Never again Facebook.

My husband and son do the same as well. To be sure or extra careful, when in doubt delete or ignore it and if it sounds to good to be true it is.

Said person was a con man through and through. I gave them records I had kept and phone msgs. Still nothing because I gave him the money, he did not take it. He also did the same to drs, pharmacists, vets and other people that I am aware of. I learnt a very hard lesson.

Be VERY careful and if something looks suspicious then don't click on it or respond in ANY way. Speak to your bank and get your card number put on hold or cancelled and order a new card. It's really terrible just how many people are willing to cheat others out of what is rightfully there's! Vigilance always.

It cracks me up when I tell them I know they are scammers, they try to argue with me! Anyway, my co-worker was the victim of a very elaborate scam yesterday. A number showed up as being from her insurance company and they told her that someone in another country charged a hospital stay to her insurance account. They supposedly transferred to a police dept in that country and she was told to put a certain communications app on her phone so they could chat with her and that it was top secret, not to let anyone else in the room or tell them about it. They convinced her to hold up her passport so they could see it. She talked with the guy for a long time until he asked for her financial info and then she finally realized it was a scam.

A while ago, someone rang me and said that they were checking our bank details for any changes. I said that nothing has changed and that was that. He insisted that I had to give him the details. I said that nothing has changed. He insisted that I had to give him the details. I told him to forget it. I hang up. This was about 30 years ago and we had a unusual bank account and he said that he was ringing up for them. I think it was an inside scam from someone working for them.

Luckily I didn't transfer money to this scammer. Another one is they hack my computer.

Everytime he makes her send him money. Honestly, this poor lady is almost starved to death, she is very ill, she has lost her vehicle and almost her home. He keeps it up,I fear for her life. Something really needs to be done and she refuses help from anyone to stop him. I think she has been brainwashed. He says he is from Turkey. He has an accent bad, and goes by Paul and John for names.

It's a Scam unfortunaley I called and first time bank didn't let payment go thru showed out of state, money was returned, beginning Dec.2024( when got computer Cleaned the company told me 900 virus in 2-days) had to change all my passwords when got it back. (Fraud same people bought $100.00 each ×16 in gift cards each day Dec.20 to 24) Apple Game never heard of this kind.(1- $25.00 some other store) Make sure you check bank account often. Luckily bank believed I didn't buy any of these and got my money back. Blocked all the numbers while scammer called me back, took pictures of screen & wrote all numbers down & took pictures of GC off site where scum bag bought them. Had to close 2- bank accounts,& cards and get all new ones, better safe than sorry. Lots of stress then I got Norton Life Lock for some protection.

They need to screen their customers more strictly. He said he lived in Victoria, Australia. He turned out to be a big black African from Ghana who had never left Africa. He never had a photo. They usually say they are widowed and don't have a job. He said he had gold. Another thing to be aware of, is that they want you to get off the site as soon as possible. My friends tried to warn me never to send money to anyone unless you have seen the whites of their eyes. Unfortunately I lost quite a lot of money. The person who alerted me to the fact they were a scam, was also a victim. What he was doing was using the addresses of other victims to say that was where he lived. The lady who alerted me had someone come to her house looking for him. Of course, he was not there. Be very careful and don't be stupid like I was. I did not get any money back because it was Africa and not Australia.

He was a financial broker and I invested equity from my house and he took my money. He did it to others too. I think he left the country. The scams weren’t as bad then as they are now. I don’t trust anyone anymore. Also a male friend of mine lost thousands to a woman on line saying she loved him.
