I always send it back

My husband usually has so many screws, nails, bolts, etc. that we can use OUR supplies to replace missing parts. It can be really frustrating, though.

Sending it back is pointless cuz you will just get the same package sent back so I would figure out a way to make it work even if it looks like a crackhead put it together

Don't buy anything that requires assembly ever.

No not furniture but it did occur with a jigsaw puzzle.

I contact the company and get the missing parts. There is no point trying to put something together without all the pieces.

I have indeed experienced this and double of other parts. It is so annoying when it states how many pieces of each is in the pack and you find more of one and others missing. Is this a sign of factory workers nolt caring about the end product?

Some of the furniture etc. is enough to drive a person insane. Some of the instructions are written in broken English. During the Covid lockdown my husband and I bought an outdoor setting but were surprised when it was delivered in a box. Nowhere did it mention some assembly required. He managed the chairs quite well but had to lay the tabletop side down in order to attach the legs but then found the table too large and too heavy to stand upright. We had to ask one of our sons to come over and lend a hand. If an item is large or heavy the instructions should tell you not to attempt assembly alone.

As far as your question on kit set furniture, yes, I have purchased home office and children’s bedroom items in the past where assembly has caused me no end of stress. I am very fortunate to have a clever ‘number 8 wire’ step-father who uses his kiwi ingenuity to fix it!

I thought it was going to be a discussion page on what surgeries we’ve all had to remove parts of our bodies for health reasons… in my case, nothing too serious, but I am missing a bit from my spine

Only ever brought 2 items in kitset form,a computer desk and shelving unit from mighty ape here in NZ luckily no missing parts but they were sods of things to put together and the instructions didn't help much.

And don't forget, then you have the guy who always has parts left over, that would be my husband. lol.

Lol, I always put it together and find at least 5 spare pieces left over! 🤣

I bought a new bedroom suite about 2 years ago and it came in pieces much to my horror as I thought it came assembled. Luckily, I had a lovely neighbour who assembled the bed for me and I contacted the store and complained and they sent someone out to assemble them at no cost. I did not notice any parts over but who knows. Everything is left up to you to assemble these days.

I haven't ordered anything not put together already since my dinette set I bought in 2001! Most everything I own now was purchased at an estate sale, yard sale or thrift shop. I prefer used things. It doesn't matter if it gets scratched, or spilled on! ;-D

I handover such jobs to my son-in-law. He’s quite good at it. I hate such mechanical work myself except fixing a bed with nuts and bolts! Thank you😊

We bought a kit set shed years ago brand new was missing part of it so they replaced and the same thing happened was a faulty shipment

I just assembled a small BBQ & find I have too many screws etc left over so I inspect it & cannot find anywhere for them to go so next up I will fire it & cook a steak or two & see how I go. A mystery, or perhaps in the makers experience they have received many requests for extra bits & pieces.?

I have had the odd problem, mostly when they have two different sizes weird parts I have never seen before.

After trying to make sense of the sometimes incomprehensible instructions, [in all probability written by someone with tech knowhow], swear, figure it out and make it work.

I've assembled many flat packs and before assembly I check off all parts according to the instructions even down to counting the nuts, bolts, screws, dowelling etc. Once you know all parts are there you don't have a problem. Some flat packs I've even had more parts (screws etc) than what is listed. If you ever find parts missing (before assembly) it really depends on the organisation you purchased the item from in the first place. I'd prefer to deal with retail stores within my city as returns or suuply of parts can be easier than if dealing (sometimes) with online organisations.

Yes, I have experience with all the troubles you mentioned. I try contacting the seller, or the manufacturer to try and get the missing parts. Then it depends on how difficult it is to return the item vs they value of the purchase. More often than not, it's not worth more trouble than a few phone calls or emails. In that case I just look around town until I can find what I need and confirm that I will never buy from the offending company again.

Once I had almost completed a desk but you guessed it there was a bolt missing, but found a slightly bigger bolt. So I pulled it apart and started again with more success.

I got a set of bunks recently for my kids and it was'nt untill it was 80% assembled that I realised some of the bolts and nuts are missing and one of the safety bars wo'nt line up with the holes in the metal frame, over a week later I'm working out a way to fix the problem (without it looking like 5 yr old tried to fix it) lol🤪Edited 03-Apr-25 11:57am

I bought a flat pack book case and when I went to put the 2 halves together the dowel holes did not line up. My frustrated cry of help to hubby had him come running and he taught me how to measure/ mark-out and drill new holes so it fitted together perfectly. Sometimes it pays to be a "helpless female"

IKEA usual give an extra bolt, screw etc, so if you buy a few things then you end up with a few spare, just in case..

I did by a flat pack cutting table which had to be put together I lay everything out by the instructions & went very slowly & was able to put it together as you usually find what you think one thing is it is another & the amount there should be gives you an idea of what the correct item is.

From my experience, if parts are missing you become very proficient at swearing. So it's not all bad news...🤣

This has happened when we bought childrens furniture and a desk from IKEA. Every piece had something wrong with it.

Mostly we get second hand pieces and revamp them, works most of the time 😜

quite a few Christmas,s ago my wife bought an IKEA special, a cupboard for our new little granddaughter,15 years ago, how hard can it be I thought 3 hours later im still at ground zero, wrong screws in the wrong holes, A were screwed into C instead of B,,,,, what are you doing? she says,, It's all yours I say 4 hours later it was in our fire pit and we have never bought kit furniture again, to me these things are like making a one color jigsaw puzzle and im sure the person who invented this has gotten away with a cruel prank on mankindEdited 03-Apr-25 08:37am

There always seems to he a missing screw or two. My husband always has extra items at home, so we don't send items back.

if it is just hardware I just swear and use my own, if it is missing a structural part, I swear twice and send it back,.....

send it back and tell them its not good for their company

We always get to many parts which is good !

Sometimes had missing little parts. Sometimes had too many little parts (e.g. extra screws, and no, we didn't miss putting any in 🙂) . Sometimes had parts that don't line up quite properly or have production errors. It's simply a problem you get with mass production, especially when it involves trying to count out small parts. If it's a big problem, you can usually go back to the shop and get the missing part(s) or a replacement kit set, unless perhaps being if it is an 'end of run' model no longer being made or sold, but then you should get a refund if it is a major issue like badly mis-aligned screw holes.🙂Edited 03-Apr-25 07:31am

A cupboard we bought wasn't able to construct because the parts didn't line up. Had to return it and they sent us another one. Where is their pride in doing a job well.

Never had a issue unless it’s says “sold as is” then u know things might be missing

lay out all the parts and double check, go from there. if something way off contact them otherwise probably have the odd nut bolt etc in the workshop.

I would send it back.

When I get it home I will go through all the hardware ,if something is wrong they then hear about it. If it is just a screw or minor I get to and finish the job.

Do both depending on what the problem is. If it's a hard to replace part then ask for the missing piece, otherwise make do with what I have.

Usually it's something minor, like a nut or bolt, so we can probably find something to substitute, left over from another project. Never had anything significant go missing, fortunately.

When it comes to following directions, I'm the worst. I won't send it back, but I'll look at the photo of the finished product and make it work.

Yes, it's annoying! Another issue is it's damaged. I've returned damaged items. If it's missing screws, etc, I go to a home improvement store and buy what's needed.

I have hardly ever encounter that problem, you have to follow instructions to to the minute detail and should be no problem.

I shop at IKEA (these days) for major furniture kits! In addition, IKEA will offer you the services of professional DIY (for a fee) who have a subcontractor legal, binding agreement with IKEA. That way I avoid the missing bolts, or the joints don't quite line up, etc. Furthermore, just 'thinking' about doing a DIY project will give me a headache (LOL) - I have vision issues which will impact (negatively) any DIY projects for me. I am not a DIY - under any circumstances - LOL!

When we have bought furniture from Sauder they were good about sending missing parts or replacing a defective part with just a phone call. With other companies not so sure, We put together a bookcase and the shelves wouldn't fit properly. And instructions are not very helpful, With screws and bolts, etc, husband usually has a stash in the toolbox and can usually find something to make it work,

Yes that is a pain in the arse really .

I always make do. Whether it's using parts from items bought previously or finding a skinny, but strong, stick to use as a missing peg. I have also gone to Canadian Tire for screws that I don't have in my toolbox.

I keep some spare bits in my toolbox just in case. Also, I have had some furniture arrived with the manual not in English or difficult to understand.Edited 03-Apr-25 00:32am
