Discussion of the Day
Earliest memories
TimtamApr 09, 25
From what I've read recently, the general consensus seems to be that people can usually not recall memories before around 3 years old. With the earliest memories generally between the ages of 3 to 6 years.
Obviously there would be a lot of factors that could influence whether memories are formed retained & recalled.eg trauma etc.
My earliest memory is not super clear, but I recall being prevented from entering the loungeroom & being really frustrated that I couldn't get past the barriers in the doorways. I believe it relates to when the lounge room carpet was being laid.
I would have been around 2 years 7 months old. ( confirmed by mum when she was alive)
What is your earliest memory?

Playing in a big yard lots of people around it was warm and I was playing in water. I remember chickens and some dogs and a lot of big people and eating watermelon. I was maybe 2 and half or three and there were several cats there as well. I later was sitting on I believe my grandpa's lap and putting my hand in his mouth and his teeth fell out and it scared me. He and other people laughed.

My eldest child (now in their 20's) remembered being born. They used to talk about it when they were little, we never said how the birth happened (traumatic 56 hour labour ending in an emergency C/section). We spoke to several doctors who mentioned that most children do remember their birth but by the time they can talk, they completely forget about that part of their life. Some children keep the memory of their birth.

I don't remember much of my childhood at all. When I was about 7 I distinctly remember a mouse running up Dad's sleeve from the chook food in the garage........... but I only remember certain things.

I was 5 years old when, one day Mum had to go to Town with my little brother, those days it was the bus or walk, it was raining so she made the call for a taxi, I had to stay with Dad, and he decided that we should give Mum a surprise ,and we cooked a pea and ham soup. When Mum came back she was very tired, she put the baby i his cot and she sat down on the couch, and was explaing to Dad what went on in town, Than she stood up and said " what's that smell, I proudly replied, "It's our dinner" Dad and I made it, she was so pleased

Memories can easily be mixed up. Sometimes, even as an adult, dreams can be mixed up with real memories. This is more likely for children. Siblings often have different memories of the same event. Even the courts and police do not depend on the memories of observers of an events when recall is needed in court. How can the memory of a 3 or even 7, 8 or 10 year old ? I sometimes don't know or remember why I went into a room or what I am looking for. I really can't trust something that happened 60 years. I do recall somethings from my early years but I don't know if I was 4 or 8 for example. It is complicated.

I was approx18months old. I remember a 'doctor' playing 'stack the blocks' with me as he kept putting and switching things on my face (was giving me an eye exam to see how I overshot/undershot/ got it right for lenses for the glasses I desperately needed).

My earliest memory was the trauma of breaking my leg and the teacher refusing to believe me. When my mother came home and found me she rushed me to hospital because I was in shock. That memory is true, I remembered it as hazy but mum filled it in for me, however, one of my sons has memory's that are pure fantasy and we haven't been able to convince him of that.

Most memories we think we have of when we were young seem to be enhanced by our parents telling us of these things. Although I know a lot of the things that happened to me when I was very young, I genuinely don't believe I remember them happening.

Never found out the movie name. I recall my 1st day at school when after 10 minutes another kid smashed a slate ( yes we had them back then) over a head of another kid.

I remember my older brother hating the new house so he took me and ran away up the road. These memories are clear as a bell, I close my eyes and see it. Then I can remember going to the hospital to get my younger brother. He was born 2 years 7 months after me

Anyways my brother and I were being watched by the babysitter my parents had hired while they went to work during the morning till the afternoon(day shift). The babysitter was making us lunch that day she was over to watt my brother and I , Kraft dinner we were suppose to have, when my brother and I were in the kitchen where we were told not to be playing while the stove is on when my brother grabbed the handle of the pot that was hot water boiling and pulled it off the stove , I screamed and he screamed we were both very lucky not to have gotten burned by the scowling hot water …

My great grandmother lived with my grandmother afew doors down from my house. I was there often. A petite elderly lady would visit, she was known to me as Aunt Minnie. She was tiny* as my grandmother and great grandmother were under 5ft ,she was much smaller. She had the softest skin and smelled like a beautiful bouquet of flowers. I remember greeting her at the door. My mother was astounded when I asked her about Aunt Minnie when I was 5years old, describing her in detail. My mother told me she passed away when I was 18mths old,my memory was of the last time she visited. I also remember how hot it was,my grandmother had a cooler that she filled with ice,I can remember the smell of it.

The flooring was incomplete so I was able to crawl through the gap and escape to under the house. I hid in the backyard for awhile - then what? I was tired so I crawled back into the room and had a nap.

I remember summer vacation places (but maybe from the ubiquitous home movies?), and I have music memories associated with places and events... music is a huge memory thing for me...

I was uninjured. Later it was revealed that the enemy bomber had lost its way when trying to teturn to it's homeland.

As a three year old I loved the sun on my bum, but I've luckily grown out of that! What's interesting is that they've recently found that children under 3 years old have memories from under 1 years old but as we reach 3 our brains rapidly develop and they're not sure if those memories are lost or if they're made dormant after that point. Pretty interesting stuff.

It was wet there. My Mom picked me up, thinking I wet myself...then when she took off the diaper, I vividly remember peeing over her shoulder. She says I was around 1 year and 8 months old. Second memory, a bad one, was when I was 2, literally a week after my 2nd birthday...same apartment I remember having a pillow put over my face. That's all I remember, and, for context, what had happened was my mom's boyfriend at the time..NOT my father, they had split by then...he said "I will go make sure he is quiet"...and he proceeded to put a pillow over my face and "quiet me". Needless to say I was technically dead for a few minutes before my Mom gave me CPR and revived me. Guy got arrested and I randomly ran into him 20 years later. I ended up confronting him and, well, I'll leave it at that. Payback was achieved. Next day he left the city I am in and moved out of the country, and has never been back. And, he had to have someone drive him, he had no use of his arms or legs.

When one grows up in a very dysfunctional family, always changing moms, to housekeepers, back to moms, it causes memories to bury themselves. If I remember anything, I'll add it later... ;-( Okay, so, when I was around 8 (?) my dad took us 'camping'. We'd stay in a cabin, ride horses, swim in the pool, and go on hikes. That was one of my first family memories. ;-D

My mom worked a night job so she was sleeping. I decided to cook a roast for my brother and I. I turned the oven dial up all the way and ended up setting off the smoke alarm and when I opened the door for my brother and I to leave because of all the smoke we ended up setting off the main fire alarm in the top floor of the apartment building. Needless to say the firemen and my mom were very disappointed in me.

She was so mad, but, she was able to laugh and realize it's the thought that counts!! :)

Memory is not of my baby sister but of another baby that was crying in the nursery. My aunt was matron of the maternity hospital so a special privilege to be in the nursery.

It's too bad there wasn't a photograph of that room, but then again, someone would probably say I saw the picture before and just thought I had actually been there.

I was sitting in the middle of my parents bed, protected by pillows not falling off. Also remember the dark wood of the bed frame. Aw yes the 70s. It was a 14" (?) B/W . There was a magazine rack underneath, and was wheeled in for the occasion. Side: I later used that TV in my room when I was older. :)
