I've never smoked 'anything' in my life! I have heard the number of smokers is dropping though because they put some pretty scary commercials on TV about what smoking can do to your body! ;-D

I am happy I was never interested in smoking.

Non-Smoker but the price of smokes in Australia are $60 and up, New Zealand sounds like they are about 15% cheaper there or more. I think Australia pay the most in Smoke Tax then any other Country in the World. So we are getting a raw deal that is for sure and encourages illegal activity to counter it. The Government need to pull their heads in before it gets out f hand and it's well on the way that way already.

Same here in Australia. There are about 4-5 shops in my suburb that sell under the counter smokes. They just seem to be popping up all over the place. The Government was the catalyst for the heavily increasing black market when they kept bumping up the taxes.

It seems like the more we know about how cigarette companies tried to get people addicted, the more people smoke. I don't understand this. I also see many people buying illegal cartons of cigarettes from First Nations band members selling them on the black market. Given the health care costs associated with smoking, I think exemption cigarettes from taxation is wrong. Fully tax them, end the black market buying and crime associated with selling the cigarettes off the reservations. Then, the government can just step in and ignore cigarette theft the way they ignore other thefts, and we at least have the money to fund healthcare for everyone who still smokes.

It is mad that people are willing to pay that much for cigarettes. Paying through the nose for something that is just going to kill you (slowly and painfully) is just stupid. Sorry smokers but you must know that it is true!Edited 04-Apr-25 02:10am

I think that Australia has the highest tax and its set to go up every year until someone stops them...it's a great money spinner..but it has already gone way too far....everyone who is going to give up did so a while back...the rest are not going to...so now we have organised crime supplying our cigarettes....there is gang war...fire bombing of rival shops...and the police force is expected to try and control this mess..it is a total joke...just lower the tax and take away the massive profits...morons..it is not rocket science...Edited 04-Apr-25 00:53am

I don't smoke but have noticed around my area, fewer people reek of it. It used to be a very high percentage because tobacco was grown here and farmers got rich off of their crops. They've all transitioned to corn or soybeans, some to apple and cherry orchards. This is due to the customers dying off in droves from complications from smoking and second-hand smoking. My area is no longer the spot for highest deaths from smoking in Ontario (maybe Canada?) I wouldn't trust black market cigarettes to be made from just legal substances. I dated a guy who bought them illegally and they smelled very different from other cigarettes I smell around town. No, not marijuana:)Edited 04-Apr-25 00:13am
