The subject of shells was raised on this site, with some people feeling all shells should be left at the beach. I returned from overseas once and had to go through immigration and customs in Darwin, where the customs officers walked along the line of passengers with a large plastic bin asking for shells and coral. Shells considered too small were kept along with all coral, but the coral jewellery was sold in jewellery shops in the country I had visited, and the shells were sold at markets and souvenir stores. Selling the shells and coral jewellery broke no law in that country, but Australia has a law that prohibits any coral or small shells entering the country. Is it up to Australia to decided what other countries can do with their own natural products? Isn't it up to them to place bans on things? |
