Like a Surgeon ...
APBApr 07, 25
Surgeons are usually very keen to operate on you it is their job, and it pays very well...excluding things like cancer... I have several friends who have all had surgery to fix problems...but recovery times are a way lot longer than promised one was botched completely...and nobody really thinks that they are really better off (apart from the surgeon involved!)....what does everybody else think?...has ANYBODY got a great story about surgery?..and how it changed their life?

I waited 20 + years to get a referral so when I plucked up the courage to do so I was so happy & elated to tell you the truth. The wait was about 2 months I was so ready for this, the day of surgery happened the nurses & surgeons were amazing I asked him to make it like NEW please after my Op I had complications and was rushed back to theatre Twice where the operation was successful I stayed 5 days and I am proud to say that when it comes to life Or surgery that I trust wholeheartedly all medical personnel and surgeons with my life Thankyou for & to you because I have a life

if you have had surgery, I reckon the only great story is, here I am, caca occurs, but having been through more than my fair share of surgeries, I came out well on all, been lucky I reckon, nah, not luck, great docs,,,,,

I have had 2 knee surgeries & my appendix out. My knee will never be like it should & I have finally accepted it. I can't stay in one position long especially with my leg bent & it swells up at the drop of a hat.

I've had some minor ones that went off without a hitch ,tonsils out and the like .. The funniest one was the time I had all four wisdom teeth out . I was propped up on the pillows the next morning ,not feeling the best while the nurse brought the trainee through ,,she spoke about the lady in the opposite bed who was in a full hip to ankle plaster cast ..then looked my way with a sympathetic smile and said " And it's quite obvious what this little one's had done" . ( l was 20) Not sure what she really meant and needing to finally make my way down to the bathrooms anyway ,, l ended up seeing my poor little puffed up and black blue face (and even further down, like they had stood on my chest to rip my teeth out) in the mirror!! . Got back to get into bed ,fainted and hit my head on the meal trolley , Came to and saw the lady in the plaster cast trying to clamber out of her bed to get me up while madly calling for the nurse ! The upside was half a stone weight loss for the week and lots of icecream and banana smoothies .

That's horribly scary. I hate dental work. I had 1 wisdom tooth out in the chair, and yes he had to straddle my chest too. It took 20 minutes of wrenching up and down til it came out, splitting both of my lips wide open and chipping my teeth directly below and next to the one he removed. Thankfully he was working within a medical centre and afterwards walked into the doctors office to have my lips attended to( like a glue to seal them). I was so swollen I could eat for a week.

Oh that's no good . I hope you are not in too much pain :( Did they at least tell u to get to The Royal Melbourne dental hosp if things get worse before hand ? They have an emergency dept and do referrals off to hospitals too. It's in Carlton so a trip in but once you are in their system ( if you have a pension card) the ongoing work is free $ 30 per visit .Nothing! I've had root canals ,cleans ,X-rays, splint made up for TMD jaw pain, fillings ...a crown would only cost me $30 ..now on the specialists list for PERIODONTIST. They have all specialists under one roof . I do know they have a daycare centre there where they operate you would need to inquire re your conditions. They treat lots of special needs kids and patients there .. It's a wait to get on their books but well worth it for future once this part gets sorted .

OK. My surgery has always been good but they are the stock standard well rehearsed operations. Nothing really life threatening. Rather than Surgeons lets have a look at the whole of medical practices of our country. The vested interests, the overall costs etc. No longer a vocation but a job. Do no harm. Have not seen it on a wall of a Dr lately. That's a shame as the whole object is to make things better and promote wellness in general not just deal with symptoms. I think the medical profession is an industry and not there to promote health. That's a huge shame.

I think you need to be very careful and SURGERY would always be the final option for me. There can often be complications after surgery. Don't rush into anything I say. Sometimes a change of life style is what is needed.

Currently dealing with this I'm 45 and losing my nursing assistant license and watching all my hard work go down the drain. I tore my meniscus a year ago dr was only supposed to fix meniscus with one screw. While he was in my knee, he found arthritis that I was having no issues with he decided to take it out. Dr said 6-to-9-week recovery. I've been down a year and two months. I'm in the worst pain I've ever experienced. I struggle to do every day things I used to do I've had steroids shots nerve blocks nothing is helping the just want to highly medicate me to where I'm sleeping can't drive nothing and still in pain. I've decided to get a second opinion after being in so much debt and in so much pain is crazy to me. I've had to apply for disability I'm heartbroken about my career I was on my way to nursing this dr totally messed my life up.

Am I the only one who saw the discussion's title and their brain went ("...touched for the very first time") lol Anyway, I am going to get a somewhat elective surgery sometime in the near future and from what I've heard from others my type of surgery is nearly always life changing for the better/extremely low regret rate and recovery surprisingly okay. But that's obviously one of the better experiences, injuries and reconstructions, etc are going to be much harder and variable results I think. So it really depends on what you're going in for/whether it's an injury reconstruction or something else, your own expectations and really the unavoidable risks/limitations of current medical techniques that determine how good or bad your overall experience is. More overall pros than cons in general though

There is a joke my son who works in healthcare shared with me. A GP, a specialist and a surgeon go duck hunting. The GP hears a noise and says "sounds like a duck", looks through his binoculars and says "yep its a duck". Shoots and says to his assistant "go get the duck". The specialist hears a noise and says "sounds like a duck", looks through his binoculars and says "yep its a duck". Shoots and says to his assistant "go get the duck". The surgeon hears a noise. Shoots and says to his assistant "go see if that's a duck".

Have never had a problem, have always discussed it fully and been very happy with the outcomes. Have never found them iver keen to operate unless it is essential, and for the years of training and the care they take they earn every cent.

I had a thyroidectomy which was very expensive. I had put it off until a surgeon told me that 1% of Australians die every year from a thyroid haemorrhage in which case I asked how soon he could perform it. When I received the pathology report it said there had been multiple haemorrhages which was pretty scary.

Isn't that a song name or something? I've had a lot of surgeries, and I am gratefull for it because I'm still alive. other wise I would have died a long long time ago. There is big pharma, or I guess that's more with the GP's not the Surgeons. Surgeons save lives that is one of the reasons the poulation exploded, not just food and soap. But now when Neo knows how to be a surgeon in our own home thing will be going in another way again.

I’ve never had a surgery, thank goodness! But I have family members, friends and colleagues gone through the process. I haven’t heard anything disastrous (they probably don’t have the chance to tell the story?) I believe people committed to the healthcare profession are more kind and clinically driven (than those in bitcoins at least). They spent years even decades studying one discipline, most have to commit yearly learning to be qualified to practice. So, I’m assuming no one in the hospital wants to put others in harm’s way on purpose. But we all make mistakes, just when we think we can drive, there are accidents daily too. Medical professionals are humans too (but no one wants to be the victim). Plus medical professionals are heavily relying on science, which advances/ corrects as more studies / tech comes out. Ideally, people should live longer due to better healthcare outcomes. Though, it’s all dependent on accessibility, affordability and healthcare infrastructure in each country and regions. The US might want to swipe your credit cards before admitting to the hospital. But most people in Australia don’t need to have a credit card at the triage. There’s a saying, patients don’t care how much you know till you show how much you care! Legal avenues possible when a mishap happens but patients need a doctor to proof the mishap and sue. Unfortunately, most doctors don’t want to come forward & point fingers to their colleagues (they all know each others). But all of them have to have indemnity insurance, get claims from insurance if needed.

I had a fall and suffered a perforated bowel. I had 3 surgeries and they stopped me from being dead. I guess that’s a pretty big change. Recovery times vary from person to person but I’m someone who always finds the bright side of things so mine was somewhat shorter. I was like “ Woo hoo, I’m still getting up in the morning so it OK” ……….lol

In Australia especially in Sydney if you have lots of money to pay you can get the best Surgeon. It also depends on the area you live in. For example in some areas of Sydney where there’s a lot of poor people you have a lot of Surgeons who really don’t care about a patient. Since COVID it got worse and now it’s all about the money.

OK, so you lie in bed for a day after it BUT then you really have no excuse for jusrt lying there until you are sent home. Get Up! Get Walking as soon as possible! Yes you may be stiff and sore but don't let that stop you. You don't have to overdo it but get back into Living an Active life as fast as you can. I suppose it all depends on in which country you live. If the reports out of the USA are correct then may your deity help you should you ever have to be hospitalised there, a country which has forgotten all about Humanity and is obsessed with Greed and Money!

Finally my condition was so bad I was rushed to emergency hospital but the damage was already done. What could have been a simple procedure has now become an ongoing series of surgeries. Each procedure only makes the situation worse.

I have had a number of major operations in my lifetime. I was very lucky because the surgeon I had for my last 3 operations was absolutely marvelous & his bedside manner was out of this world. This shows what my surgeon was like. If you were in the waiting area & he saw you, he would always come over & greet you & would shake my husband's hand. After the consultation was over, he would always give me a hug. I always remember the time when I was actually on the operation table & I asked where he was. I was told he was getting changed into scrubs. The next minute, he came into the operating theatre, put his bag down & immediately came over to me & in front of the staff in theatre, he gave me a great big hug. He, by doing that, put my scared thoughts at bay & I felt quite relaxed after that.

NO! The movie was based on a science-fiction-novel by Michael Crichton. There are a lot of double-entendres in the movie involving mechanical bolts and inhumanly speed - lol!

I can't comment for others but my surgery at the age of 7 was life altering. I had Perthes disease which I think from memory is thought to be due to the blood supply to the femoral head being disrupted somehow and it can lead to bone death, collapse and deformity. After conservative treatment did not help I ended up having an operation on my affected hip joint to relign my hip joint and insert temporary "pins": to keep it in place while it healed. I spent 6 weeks in a cast from my chest down to the ankle on the affected leg and flat on my back. Then the pins were removed & I was free of the cast ! Such a good feeling to be able to have a bath again! Anyhoo once my leg was used to weightbearing again I went from strength to strength, pain free. Another girl who my mum knew was not so lucky. Her parents refused the operation and her hip deteriorated and last we had heard she was needing to use a wheelchair most of the time. The only issue I have developed is what I presume to be mild osteoarthritis in later life, but it has never been bad enough to require intervention. Was surgery worth it? Absolutely it was ! I am very grateful to my parents for getting it done. The second was my emergency c section and yep that was worth it too for both myself and breach baby number 2 to arrive safely.

I should have died at 30 in 1976 with a motorcycle collision but was repaired skillfully. I've had both knees replaced since then, had five stents inserted over about five years ago, as needed, had a pacemaker installed two summers ago and an aortic valve replacement most recently by persons who performed miracles on my aging carcass, with extraordinary skill and compassion. I'm 78 now...against all the odds and many self-destructive lifetime choices. Sure...they're well-paid...I sincerely hope they are. None of these procedures were DIY ... I'm just so grateful for the willingness of strangers to help another stranger they'll likely never meet again and with such compassion and dedication to excellence.

(I was told not to run for 6 weeks, but I don't listen to doctors.) About 7 years ago, I had a fatty tumor on my arm that got irritated by my watch. Both my primary care doctor and my dermatologist told me that these are removed with local anesthesia. However, the hospital was next to the surgeon's office, and he was part owner of the hospital, so he made more money if patients had to go to the hospital. I didn't know I was going to have to have blood tests, ekg and general anesthesia. The technician doing the EKG told me that the doctor put all patients under no matter how small the bump and this also happened to her husband. Anyway, the left me on a gurney for 7 hours before doing the surgery and never informed me of a delay and the iv made me need to use the restroom often and my husband had to help me each time as no nurse was in sight. Eventually, I had a full-blown panic attack, and my limbs went numb. The doctor didn't care and just said it would be over soon. It takes me a week to feel normal again after general anesthesia, so the whole experience was horrible! I didn't even go back to the doctor for the follow up appointment as I wasn't giving him any more money! I currently have another fatty tumor near my stomach and my doctor said she could refer me to a surgeon, but I just said "no!"

The surgeon that initially put me back together was a field surgeon during the Vietnam War. He stated in his surgical report that mine were the worst broken bones he had ever seen. It took two years for my leg to heal after the surgery. After two years and several months I received a knee replacement. It wasn't great but considering how badly I was injured it was pretty good. The implant should have lasted 15 - 20 years. Well, it lasted longer than 25 years. The next problem was that I wore the darn thing out. It was so old that the company that made the implant was long out of business and replacement parts weren't available (sounds kinda like a car repair, eh?). The surgeon found someone to make a replacement part with a 3d printer. The new part was installed without a hitch in day surgery. It works great and should last me to the end of my days. I've had other orthopedic surgeries over the years (from sports injuries) and they all worked out equally well.

The doctor referred me to a specialist and within two weeks I had thyroid surgery for two large lumps and a goitre. Although health insurance is expensive, I have always had it for “just in case”. Surgeon, anaesthetist, other specialists, four days in hospital and operating room cost me $500 (the excess). All medical and hospital personnel were extremely pleasant and literally life saving.

Basically it was being nervous and hating pain. When I finally gave in I had the good fortune to be allocated a wonderful surgeon. Go figure, miracle? I think so!

My primary care physician AND my dermatologist both told me that the for a lipoma that small, local anesthesia is used (like on Dr. Pimple Popper.) The surgeon did NOT tell me that it would be general anesthesia, and he told me it would be fast and simple. When I went to the hospital, they started taking blood and doing an EKG and then they told me about the general anesthesia. (The EKG tech said that that surgeon put all his patients under no matter what! (It also happened to her husband.) I have general anxiety disorder and mild medical PSTD. Once I'm in a gown and all I kind of just shut down and feel helpless. They left me on a gurney for 7 hours without an update and I had a panic attack to the degree that my limbs were numb. I was past due for my next dose of anxiety medication. If they'd come and talked to me about the delay, I'd have made the choice to leave. I also had MediCal (California's version of Medicaid,) at the time, and you don't get a lot of choices of specialists. But if the surgeon had informed me of the general anesthesia at the time of my appointment, I'd have kept the lipoma.

The operation details should have been discussed in your Dr. office, it seems he has a reputation for choosing to put people under. Then you could have raised your concerns and made a decision, for your health, based on his response. I recently had an operation and was put under but before the operation because I was anxious I was given something to relax me. It seems you weren't and that is another red flag. You and your husband have to take some responsibility for your decisions. This did not need to happen knowing your Doctors preference for putting patients under. I will end with my earlier suggest talk to a lawyer, Americans have a reputation for suing for even the smallest perceived offence like a side eye that offended.

The doctor was called "Just in time", but I didn't know it then. After the op and he cut all my muscles in my stomach that I could not have any control over, I still had the same pain. He operated again and found that is was a cyst- not my appendix. After the operation I sat up to be prepared for visiting hours, and was in a lot of pain in my chest. My mother came in and saw me in pain and went to see a nurse or a doctor, and was told not to worry about it, I was just bunging it on because she was there. Finally a doctor came and gave be a needle to kill the pain. Then at the night visit, I sat up again to get ready for visiting hours and I was struck with another pain in the stomach. My mother was told once again that I was just bunging it on because she was there. They gave me another drug to kill the pain, so I went to sleep. Approx 8 pm that night a specialist came in and talked to me for approx 5 minutes, I was very dopey by the, he went out of the room for approx another five minutes, then he came back and asked me "Did you really have a pain". I was so dope that all I could do was nod my head. The next day they tested me and found I had a collapsed lung the first time, and the second time I had a burst lining of my stomach. The doctor had given me a double dose of what I was allergic to. Something that I had asked him to write on his notes - not to give me any more of that medicine. Because I was so traumatised by it all and had to look after two children, I felt like suing the doctors and the hospital, but I could not go through any more. The stomach affected me for a long time after as far as not being able to eat a lot of foods and being very weak. The same doctor before that, put me in hospital to stretch my back, and put weight on one leg. He visited me twice a day in hospital, and looked at the weight, said hello, something that he didn't usually do, only once every second day. It turned out that the nerve in my calf was damaged and I had constant pain in one leg. He charged me for every "Hello" while in hospital. I found out later that something could have been done to help my leg if it was treated early. I doubt that there was anywhere in those years to complain about a doctor but looking after two children in a weak state was all I could cope with at that time.

They really cover themselves and don't really care about you. I had a horrible experience where the anaesthesia didn't work and I could feel my body being cut into (it was a c-section). Long story short, I could've died (my husband who witnessed the whole thing thought I did before they kicked him out of theatre), and yet my notes said I had minimal pain and the procedure went well. What a cover-up! I asked the Dr what happened and was told I didn't need to know and that was that. No hope of suing even if I wanted to.

After the surgery the doctors said that they made an error and he didn't need as much bowel removed so didn't really need to have the stoma bag for the rest of his life. I think maybe doctors are over worked and there are too few since covid. I know a lot of the ones we had in New Zealand that came from other countries went home when covid hit.

I had misshapen sinus cavities so they didn’t drain properly. Surgery caused less bruising than the pressure from the infections. Recover was about 4 days left but I had enough sick time for the full two weeks so I used it. Had an in office uterine ablation with zero complications. Zero complications with my gallbladder removal too.

I was born in late 1964 with a dislocated hip which would have prevented me from ever walking normally had it not been for a prominent orthopaedic surgeon of the time, a Dr Rory Middleton who had been to the US to learn of their new treatments for repairing congenital dislocations like mine. I was the first Australian baby operated on by an Australian team to have the new procedure and I spent 10 weeks In hospital in a traction device before being allowed to return home. My poor mother, who was pregnant with my brother at that time in 1966, was in another hospital at that time after having a large melanoma removed from her leg and she feared that I would not remember her when she was eventually able to visit but I did, of course! To say that this was a "difficult" period for my family is an understatement as my poor Dad was working 3 jobs to afford the hospital fees as there was no Medicare then. Thank goodness for loving grandparents who stepped in and visited me during those long weeks! As for me well I was able to walk without a stick for many years, something a dear friend my age was unable to do from about the age of 12 as she had bilateral dislocations and eventually ended up in a wheelchair. Her parents were unable to afford her surgery as they had 5 children so I feel enormously blessed to have been given an opportunity to have a normal life and eventually spend nearly 20 years as an AIN then RN paying it back before I started to fall apart and require more titanium implants. I sincerely doubt that I would have another opportunity to recite this story here but I am most grateful for the skills of the surgeons I have interacted with in the past and will continue to need to do in the future! Thanks for reading.

Well I went through the second surgery and now I felt like I was just walking down hill so it's half way better and then I went to see a neurologist and they said that I have had a stroke, I guess it happened in my first surgery, so anyway I am walking down hill and after about a week or two it started to fix itself and I started walking better. Then my surgeon said after x-rays were done that I had 2 discs in my neck that were blown out and it was a simple surgery so I said ok, let's do it. Well, when they do this surgery they go into your throat and make a small cut and remove a disc and replace it with a new metal disc then they closed that up and had to make a second cut to replace the second disc I didn't know this and when I went to get my surgery done there were a few things that I did not know about this, like the doctor never told me that they go into my neck to do this so when I got there I got a shock, I had to shave my beard in order for them to do this (LOL), Hell, I really didn't know that is what was going on anyway I got the surgery done after I shaved and all was good so Ii thought, after staying for 2 day's in the Hospital after the surgery the doctor decided to release me and so I left the hospital to go home and it was 110 miles from the Hospital to the house and I really felt great and happy to be at home finally and then it hit, my throat started closing up and I wasn't getting any air so I was rushed 20 miles to a local Hospital and that was the wrong hospital that I was supposed to be at so the Ambulance drivers gad to turn around and drive me 14 miles to where the hospital was and guess what, This Hospital was only 4 miles from my house again I'm still not getting proper air so they rush me inside the ER and attempt to put hoses or tubes down my throat and they ended up knocking out my two front lower teeth to do this and I swallowed them. So I laid in that Hospital for 4 more day's to get test done and on day 4 I decided I've had enough because the doctor has never came to see me , so I took the tubes out of my throat and pulled out my wires and needles and I told them that I am getting the hell out of here so the staff called security and they tried to keep me there and we started fighting and I kept saying I"M leaving, so I left and got home and I had an appointment with my neurologist and I went to that appointment and had a MRI done and they said that with all of this, I had another Stroke. I went home, I just gave up. I wrote all of this because it is a true event, But, my point is is that my Doctor got paid very well and I still am in a lot of pain and I can't work anymore and life has become a real BITCH and I also need to say that I have tried to go and see my back doctor and no one knows where he disappeared to. This is just some mucked up shit that I have been living with and I am not crying about , I hope you folks learn what you are up against prior to letting a doctor do any work on you and pick the very best qualified doctor before getting any surgery done. I hope you all have a good day!

I can't eat normally for 3 weeks. So far all is good. I have had many surgeries and for me the worst surgeons were Plastic Surgeons, both were needed not elective and I am not happy at all! My experience with 2 out of 3 of them were so bad, both were very pompous and if I saw them in a dark alley they would need a plastic surgeon.

Yes, and I made sure she was well aware of what she did for me.

After surgery, which was not problematic, and now I can risk a blow or pressure to the stomach, say from lifting, without fear of death. All good. But you do need qualified surgeons for these things.

How is it that we live in a society where it is deemed somehow "normal" that allowing egotistical, sociopaths to HACK and CHOP us up actually "fixes" anything?!?!?! I have NEVER had to have surgery, and never will. I went to an ER once when I was in a major car accident I walked away from...and I had a broken finger that I MYSELF reset back into place, then stitched up myself and braced it MYSELF. Why? The nurse couldn't "stomach" it. I quickly got out of there and have never been back. To this day I regained full function of my finger and I sometimes forget which one got injured.Resetting bones, stuff like that, yeah, maybe let them do it. I KNOW what I am doing, so I don't need them. But, no, hacking people up to "fix" them is just a moneymaker and to reinforce the pedestal society puts them on so you STAY psychologically trauma bonded to the satanic big pharma cartel.
